Synopsis

After the Lovelet family’s third house fire, Candy and her family are staying with Uncle Ronnie, “the town crazy”, in a less-than-desirable neighborhood. During Candy’s 5th grade year at school, her two youngest brothers go on drug-fueled crime sprees and get arrested. Internet trolls bash the family online, other kids shun Candy, and a D.S.S. worker comes knocking on the door. Meanwhile, Candy reminisces about her oldest brother, who is already in prison, her oldest sister who has beaten the odds and become a teacher, and her other sister, who died before Candy was born. Candy suffers anxiety attacks as the events of the novel unfold. She sees that her love interest, Tyler, is not what she thought he was, and wonders how to revise her dreams of the future. When a stranger gives the family a free trailer after reading about their plight in the newspapers, the family is filled with hope and set about turning the place into a home. This respite is short-lived, however. Their dreams of making a new home for themselves are thwarted when Daddy Bernie takes a chainsaw to the dining room table, on Easter, in a jealous rage; and one brother, out of jail on bond, relapses and goes on another crime spree. The story’s tragic events culminate when Mama is found dead at the new trailer, having overdosed on prescription drugs. Candy’s father subsequently abandons her; and the novel ends with Candy living at Grandma Delay’s, attending church, and trying to figure out what comes next. Though Candy seems to have found some measure of peace by the end of the novel, she still has a hand gun stashed beneath her bed; just in case Papa decides to do to her what he did to her older sister.

New Cover! Candy, Sweet and Sour

It has come to my attention recently that the original cover for Candy, Sweet and Sour looked like a book about child trafficking. Imagine my chagrin when this tidbit came up at dinner with a dear friend. She is my greatest champion and is always telling fellow bibliophiles to read my book. When she showed the paperback to someone, they recoiled in horror because of the image of the girl with the lollipop.  People DO judge a book based off it's cover, so I immediately changed the cover. Since publishing three years ago, I have become better at graphic design.  The original cover was created using Amazon's paperback cover designer on KDP, and I started with a generic design and used one of their stock photos. My new cover reflects themes in the book and was created using Canva.   What are your thoughts? Do you like the new cover? Are you more likely to read this book now that the cover is changed than previously? Get your copy on  Amazon  today!...

That it has been over a year is astonishing, and yet it is even more astonishing that it hasn't been two or five years given the events over the past 12 months.  Ups and downs to be sure.  In real life, Mama got sick and has been in intensive care.  After a couple of months, she is finally giving them heck in a rehabilitation facility, where she is cranky and tells her physical therapist she wants to sleep.  At night, she goes to the common areas like the recreation room and looks for flowers to rearrange and people to meet. Mama's flower arrangement. Mama picked these flowers in the garden. Goats at my daddy's house. Goats at my daddy's house. Some of the inspiration for Candy in my sister/mama's room at my daddy's.
